While most technology journalists point their noses up at cases, I’m the exact opposite. More often than not, I’ll buy a case for my new toys before getting the toys themselves. Why? Because money doesn’t grow on trees, and a $30 piece of plastic to protect a $700 phone makes economic sense. Now the new Google Nexus 7 doesn’t cost $700, it’s actually less than half that depending, but that still doesn’t mean you shouldn’t protect it!

The guys at Android Police have recently discovered that Amazon has begun selling what ASUS calls the “Official Premium Cover” for the 2013 Nexus 7. Yes, it looks exactly like Apple’s Smart Cover, but it’s technically “better” since it also covers the back of the device. It’ll cost you around $33, it comes in in two colors (black, white), and it looks like it can take a beating. I will say I’m not a fan of the ASUS logo, but I can live.

What about you, are cases a requirement or something that’s not even on your radar?
