The new Nokia made a comeback earlier this year by announcing three new Android-running smartphones — the Nokia 6, 5 and 3 — along with the iconic Nokia 3310 at MWC 2017. Now, the folks over at FrAndroid have managed to get their hands on a prototype unit of Nokia’s upcoming flagship handset: the Nokia 9.

The Nokia 9 prototype features a 5.27-inch Quad HD display, 4GB RAM, dual 13MP cameras at its back, 64GB storage, and a Snapdragon 835 chipset with Quick Charge 3.0 support. There is also a fingerprint scanner located on the front of the device.

The prototype unit is covered in a thick case that covers its design, but it does confirm the presence of a headphone jack and capacitive navigation buttons on the handset. The display on the prototype unit had good viewing angles, contrast levels, and brightness levels of more than 530 nits. The unit also ran a near-stock build of Android 7.1 Nougat, though this should not be surprising since other Android-powered phones from Nokia announced so far have also been running a near-stock Nougat build.

As for the dual-13MP shooters at the rear, Nokia’s implementation is similar to that of the Huawei’s P9 and P10. The secondary sensor only captures photos in black & white (monochrome), and it is used in conjunction with the primary 13MP sensor to improve photos. As per a quick testing from FrAndroid though, the 13MP shooters are rather mediocre and capture photos that are strictly average in nature. Now, it’s possible that the final build of Nokia 9 will feature better image quality, though don’t get your hopes too high on the phone outperforming the likes of the Galaxy S8 or LG G6.
