Nokia 8 leak

The new Nokia-branded lineup of Android phones has been a mid-range affair so far, but that’s changing at some point in the future.

Both Nokia, and HMD Global (the company manufacturing the handsets) have been teasing a high-end smartphone since their partnership was announced. And the wait is almost over. VentureBeat has revealed the first clear image of what’s believed to be the Nokia 8, showing off rounded edges, plenty of bezel, and a pair of cameras on the back.

According to the report, the Nokia 8 will boast a 5.3-inch QHD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and a pair of 13-megapixel cameras on the back. Those cameras will (hopefully) benefit from Carl Zeiss optics. The color options are said to be gold/copper, steel, gold/blue, and blue.

The handset looks quite similar to the earlier Nokia-branded smartphones from HMD Global, but that isn’t too surprising. The companies have been building a nice stable of handsets up to this point, filling in price points as well as meeting certain spec demands for those intended markets. It will be interesting to see if a device like the Nokia 8, even with its dual cameras and high-end specifications, can go up against the reigning competition in the Android market, especially from Samsung and a resurgent HTC brand.

Whatever the end result, it is good to see Nokia returning to the smartphone world one device at a time.
