Use a Nexus 6P on T-Mobile’s network in the U.S.? Here is some good news for you. The handset has now been officially certified by the carrier for its Band 12 frequency, which means that you should get better LTE network coverage and speed in areas where T-Mobile has deployed its network on the 700Mhz frequency.

When initially launched, Band 12 support on the Nexus 6P was disabled because it was still lacking the necessary certification from T-Mobile. Now, with the handset receiving the necessary certification from T-Mobile, it can now take advantage of the carrier’s far penetrating 700Mhz frequency.

However, Google will first have to roll out a software update to unlock the Band 12 frequencies on the modem. Since T-Mobile and Google have not announced any software update or a timeline for any such software update, it is possible that Google will just silently snuck in a new radio with its December security update patch for the 6P.

Beside offering faster LTE speeds and being more battery friendly, the 700Mhz band on T-Mobile’s network is also 2x better at penetrating walls and other similar structures, which leads to better network connectivity inside malls and buildings.
