Will the Nexus 5 skip the large 1080p screen trend and go for 720p and portability instead?

A new rumor coming out of Phone Arena says that the next Nexus phone isn’t going to have a 1080p screen; it’s going to have a 720p panel that measures just 4.5 inches diagonal. The display is said to occupy 88% of the front of the device. To put that number into some perspective, the 5 inch screen in Sony’s Xperia ZL takes up “only” 76% of the front of the device.

But wait, there’s more! The rumor continues, saying the phone will have a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Nothing too surprising there. And that the camera will have a 9 megapixel CCD camera sensor. That’s a bit wonky, but weirder things have happened.

Should you believe this rumor? Hell, people will write anything in order to get a traffic spike, but something tells me that Phone Arena is onto something. Especially considering that all the rumors say the next iPhone, not the 5S, but the one after that, will have a 4.5 inch screen.

The race to make a phone with the largest screen is pretty much done. Now the industry is going in the opposite direction. As someone who owns a Note II, I’m both terrified and excited about that.
