At some point between now and the end of the year, Google is going unveil a brand new Nexus smartphone that most people assume will be called the Nexus 5. The phone has been throughly leaked, and it’s even been FCC certified. For those who haven’t been keeping up with the news, the Nexus 5 will be made by LG, it’ll have a 5 inch 1080p panel, and it’ll run Android 4.4 KitKat. Someone, probably a Google employee, recently installed GFXBench on the device and it looks like the next Nexus is going to stupid fast, like iPhone 5s fast.

This “conclusion”, if you even want to call it that, comes from an incomplete run of the benchmarking suite. There are probably some instances where the iPhone 5s is faster, though we’ll find out soon enough. So does this mean the Snapdragon 800 is as capable as the A7 inside the new iPhone? Well, it’s hard to say, because one chip runs Android and the other runs iOS. Apple has tuned iOS 7 to sing on the A7, and likewise, maybe Google has done something to KitKat to make it the most performant version of Android yet.

That’s the real story here, can Google make Android leaner so that companies like Samsung and HTC don’t have to throw insane amounts of compute power at the operating system to run smooth? One of the original rumors about KitKat was that it was tuned to run on low end hardware.

If true, that means it’ll run even better on faster chips.
