Motorola Moto Maxx trademark

Motorola has a successor to their successful Moto X coming at some point later this year, with all eyes pointed towards the end of September. In the meantime, or maybe even after that, though, the company probably has other handsets waiting in the wings for their own time in the limelight. Based on a recent trademark filing, we could be looking at the name of one of them.

As noted by AndroidPolice, though, this raises more questions than provides answers. Specifically, the naming scheme is somewhat odd. While Motorola has indeed put quite a big focus on the “Moto” name as of late, these devices have been primarily free of any proprietary software, or heavy/bloated skins. On the other hand, “Maxx” is directly linked to the company’s previous “Droid”-branded devices, which have launched exclusively for Verizon, and featured proprietary user interfaces right out of the box.

The naming scheme is indeed strange. It could indicate that Motorola plans on releasing a Moto variant, perhaps a relative to the Moto X or Moto G, that features a huge battery. Or, it could tell us that Verizon has opted to drop the Droid branding altogether. It could just be a trademark that Motorola wanted to secure, but has no plans to actually use as branding for a device in the market.

What do you think this device could be?
