While HTC may have been the first major manufacturer to announce their plans to upgrade the One (M7) and One (M8) to Android L at some point in the future, they certainly aren’t the only one. Motorola Germany has confirmed that the next major version of Android is coming to their devices soon, hopefully making plenty of Moto X and G owners out there happy.

One of the benefits of the Moto lineup is its use of relatively stock Android, which means Motorola should be able to issue updates to their devices relatively quickly. They’ve done a relatively good job so far with the Moto X and Moto G, and it looks like that trend will continue to the next major version of Android. Motorola Germany, through a public post on their Facebook page, has confirmed that “Android 5.0” will be landing on their Moto X and Moto G devices sometime this fall. No exact dates were provided, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

The post itself is interesting because they call Android L, which is what Google is currently calling the next version of the platform, “Android 5.0,” which HTC didn’t do. Does that mean that Android L is indeed Android 5.0, and not some Android 4.x version? Not necessarily, as Motorola could just be going with the media flow with this one. But, with the major changes that are coming to Android as a whole, it seems likely that Google would want to give this build its own version number, especially to build upon.

Moreover, the Moto E isn’t mentioned at all. Does that mean it won’t get the update, or won’t see the update rolled out at the same time? It could. It might not. It’s too early to say, and Motorola Germany could just be making sure to drum up attention for their Moto X and Moto G. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Update: Looks like it may have been too early to say that Motorola will be updating anything. According to the manufacturer, that particular Facebook page is not directly related to Motorola, and was only created recently. So, Motorola actually hasn’t followed HTC’s steps and confirmed Android L is coming to their devices at any particular time. Here’s the statement from Motorola regarding the situation:

Unfortunately, we have found that a Facebook profile under the name “Motorola Germany” with the following URL facebook.com/MotoDACH/ was created. We would like to point out that this is not an official Motorola site and expressly distance ourselves from said content. All relevant information about Motorola can be found only here on this page.

Do you own a Moto X or Moto G? Are you excited to get the Android L update so soon?
