Modular design is a major focus for the Moto Z and its brethren, but to date the device hasn’t had a lot of options for customers to choose from.

While the stock Moto Z is a noteworthy device on its own, Motorola’s banking on the modular design taking off. The only way that can happen, though, is if there are Moto Mods to sell. So, in hopes to kick up attention for the endeavor, Motorola is teaming up with Verizon and Indiegogo to announce the “Transform the Smartphone Challenge.”

The deal is this: Create a Moto Mod that the Moto team likes. If you do that, you’ll be invited to a hackathon, and, from there, encouraged to build a crowdfunding campaign of your own. If that all goes well, finalists will pitch at Motorola’s headquarters in Chicago, where a chance at funding for the Moto Mod is possible, and distribution at Verizon stores is also an option.

Motorola has its own Moto Mods Developer Kit, which is available n a variety of countries, so this isn’t the first time the company has tried to get developers interested in building some modular accessories for the Moto Z. Considering the smartphone market moves quickly, Motorola has to jump on the Mod development as quickly as possible, and try to keep people interested in the idea.
