One of the best parts of the Moto X, even since the original, has been the options of customization that Motorola has provided owners.
That customization goes far beyond just picking between two or three colors, as many manufacturers offer these days. Instead, through Moto Maker, Motorola provides a plethora of color, or even wood options, highlights, memory capacity, and other options that can all be combined to create a truly unique smartphone. It’s one of the strongest features from Motorola to date, and it’s about to get better.
As revealed in a new report from WIRED, Motorola is setting the stage for a brand new version of Moto Maker, which it plans to activate in March 2015, and will not only keep providing options for smartphones, but also include customization options for the company’s Android Wear-based smartwatch, the Moto 360.
The customization options won’t be as abundant as the smartphone brethren, at least not at first. In March, customizing a Moto 360 means from selecting between black, silver or champagne gold for casing, and selecting between two-sized bands. The bands will come in either metal or leather. You will also be able to choose from up to 11 different watch faces, of which the one selected will be the first seen once the watch gets powered on.
The Moto Maker interface won’t be changing much, either, which means that while you build the Moto 360 of your dreams, you’ll be able to see what it looks like with each individual customization option implemented as you make them. It’s an excellent way to get a feel for what the watch will look like before you pull the trigger on a purchase, making sure that it’s exactly what you want –and not what some manufacturer wants you to want.
Interestingly enough, Moto Maker’s ability to offer up personalization is something of a hot topic as of late, as Apple’s Jony Ive, Senior Vice President of Design, came forward and said that, essentially, design shouldn’t be left up to the customer, but should be handled by the company building the product. Motorola’s president went on the record saying that Apple’s products are “outrageous” when it comes to pricing, and bolstered the idea of Moto Maker, by saying they offer up options, which is what people actually want.
The new Moto Maker won’t necessarily sway folks who are adamantly against smartwatches, but it does seem to be a step in the right direction for making it a personable fashion statement, as watches have long been meant to achieve in the first place.
Do you plan on building a Moto 360 through Moto Maker when it launches in March?
