Yesterday, Motorola brought back its Moto X series from the dead with the launch of the Moto X4. While not a flagship handset, the Moto X4 is an upper mid-range handset that offers an almost flagship-like experience. Among other things, the Moto X4 comes with a unique new trick up its sleeve: it can stream audio to up to four Bluetooth devices at once.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 launched earlier this year was the only phone to offer the ability to stream audio to multiple devices at once. However, the handset was limited to streaming audio to only two devices. Moto, however, has managed to two-up Samsung and offer the ability to stream audio to four Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

While the Moto X4 offers Bluetooth 5.0, the feature is not a part of the latest Bluetooth standard. Instead, Moto has been able to achieve this by working with a French startup called Tempow. The latter has been able to achieve this by offering its own proprietary driver that works over the standard Bluetooth implementation. The feature works with all existing Bluetooth devices and will not require you to invest in new Bluetooth speakers.

There’s one small catch though: If you end up connecting your Moto X4 to four Bluetooth devices at once, you will not be able to connect the device to a 5GHz Wi-Fi network. Instead, on such occasions, the device will be limited to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi standard. 5GHz Wi-Fi network is still not widely used by consumers so it is unlikely that many people are going to notice this bottleneck.
