Being on the latest version of Android is something that I know a lot of you care about. I’m rocking Android 4.1 on my Galaxy Note II and can’t find anything to complain about, but I know that’s considered blasphemy in some circles. So with that in mind, I’m happy to announce that the Moto G, when it ships in the United States early next year, will come with Android 4.4 KitKat installed out of the box. This information comes straight from Mark Randal, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain & Operations at Motorola.
Here’s the full quote:
“Here is the way to think about it: We have different waves of releases. UK, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, France are in what we call Wave 1. And Wave 1 will release with 4.3. By the end of January, all those people will get onto 4.4. Wave 2, products that we ship after Christmas, will start with KitKat. So if you think about it, everyone by the end of January will have KitKat. Wave 2 is in the US; there’s South East Asia, and other countries. Overall, the device will be in more than 30 countries, with 60 carrier or channel partners.
Should you even be excited about the Moto G? I know I am, despite the fact that it’s considered a mid-range device. For $199, how can you ignore a 4.5 inch 720p screen, Snapdragon 400 processor, and 1 GB of RAM? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: In my honest opinion, the Moto G is the most important device Google launched this year. Not the Nexus 5, nor the Moto X.
