The first batch of Android Wear smartwatches — the Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch — are already available for sale across all the major retailers in most markets of the world. However, they feel like unfinished products with many major and minor hardware and software niggles and shortcomings.
One such missing feature is an ambient light sensor on these devices, which means that the user has to constantly manually adjust the brightness for the screen to be visible in direct sunlight and indoors.
The Moto 360, which already looks like a better offering than the current crop of Android Wear smartwatches, seems to include an ambient light sensor to avoid this issue.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Motorola’s Cathay Bi explains the importance of the small bezel on the front of 360, which houses not only the touchscreen driver but also an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the display brightness depending on the lighting condition.
An ambient light sensor might seem like a big deal but it is one of those features that we all take for granted in our devices nowadays. The lack of it on the G Watch and the Live means that users need to constantly adjust the brightness of the device to make the content on its screen visible at all times.
The Moto 360 is looking like the first ‘hero’ Android Wear smartwatch worth buying with its sleek and sexy looks and the emphasis on usability from Motorola. Now, only if the company would release the smartwatch so that potential consumers can actually start buying it.
