One of CyanogenMod’s team core members — Koushik Dutta — has long been teasing the ability to mirror the contents of your Android device to a TV using Google’s $35 HDMI steamer — Chromecast. Today, he has finally made the feature public, albeit in beta form, via his Mirror app.

Using the app, Nexus 5 owners can mirror the content of their device to the Chromecast. There is virtually no latency, at least in the demo from Koush, but your mileage may vary depending on your Wi-Fi network configuration and performance.

The sad part is that the Nexus 5 is the only handset, at least for now, that can mirror its content to the Chromecast since it has the required hardware — a dedicated VP8 encoder. Root access is also required since the app needs to install itself into the /system partition before it can work properly.

Koush promises to release a non-root solution down the line but if you cannot wait that long, head over to G+ to join the ClockworkMod community and the Mirror beta program before you can download the app from the Play Store.
