Microsoft’s suite of Office productivity apps for Android tablets have been in preview for quite a few months now. Starting from today though, Microsoft is announcing the general availability of Excel, Word and PowerPoint for Android tablets.
This means that if you known a decent Android tablet that has at least 1GB of RAM, you can head over to the Google Play Store to download Word, Excel and PowerPoint for free. All the three apps have been optimized to take advantage of the bigger screen offered by tablets but still have that unmistakable Office feel to them. The apps have a handy “most recently used” list that populates files not only from your tablet, but also from your PC, laptop and other devices where you use Office.

Office on Android tablets will run on any Android tablet as long as it has a minimum screen size of at least 7-inches and is powered by an ARM based processor. It should also have 1GB of RAM and should be running on Android 4.4 KitKat. While the lack of support for the latest version of Android — Lollipop — is a bummer, Microsoft promises to add support for it in a subsequent update. The Redmond based company will also add support for Android devices that are powered by Intel processors “within a quarter.”
While the apps themselves are free to download and use, they do contain certain premium features that will require an Office 365 subscription. Owners of Android tablets with a screen size that is greater than 10.1-inches will also need an Office 365 subscription to use the apps.
