Meizu Pro 5

Meizu today announced its latest flagship at an event in China: the Pro 5. The handset packs in some really impressive internals that is right up there with the very best Android flagships available out there from OEMs like Samsung and LG.

The PRO 5 is the first smartphone from Meizu under its new ‘PRO’ moniker. The impressive handset features a metal unibody shell, and looks like a hybrid between the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 from front, and that of the HTC One and iPhone 6 from the back. The front of the Pro houses an impressive 5.7-inch Super-AMOLED display with Full HD resolution. It is protected by a curved 2.5D glass that ensures that swiping from the edges of the handset is a pleasant experience.

Under the hood, the Pro 5 is powered by the beastly Exynos 7420 chipset. This is the same chipset that is found inside the Galaxy S6 and Note 5 and is unarguably the best chipset available for Android devices this year. The phone will be available in two RAM and storage variants: 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB.

The Pro 5 will also come with a microSD card slot, so you can always expand the storage for cheap in the future. The 32/64GB storage chip inside the handset is based on the blazing fast UFS 2.0 interface, so it is impressive that Meizu got it to work nicely with a microSD card controller, something which apparently Samsung has been unable to do.

Other key specs of the device include mTouch 2.1 fingerprint sensor, dual SIM connectivity, LTE Cat. 6 support, 3050mAh battery with mCharge 2.0 that can charge the phone from 0-65% in only 30 minutes, and a USB Type-C port.

As for the cameras, the Pro 5 feature a 21MP shooter at the back that makes use of Sony’s 1/2.4″ IMX230 sensor. The front houses a 5MP snapper from OmniVision. Meizu has optimised its camera app and performance and says that it is now possible to take a picture in only around 0.17 seconds through the Pro 5.

One of the slides during the Pro 5 presentation mentioned that the handset was capable of recording 4K videos at 120FPS, which if true, is downright impressive. The ES9018 signal processor and the OPA1612 headphone amplifier ensures that the Pro 5 is able to deliver “high-fidelity” audio.

Lastly, the Pro 5 will run on Flyme OS 5 that is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. It comes with a number of enhancements including re-designed system apps, improved performance, and more. At the launch event, Meizu demonstrated that the Pro 5 was faster at opening apps when compared to the Galaxy S6 and other high-end Android devices.

The Meizu Pro 5 will go on sale from October 12, with the 3GB RAM/32GB variant being priced at CNY2800 (~$440). The 4GB RAM/64GB variant has been priced at CNY3100 (~$490).
