Marshmallow adoption August 16

Android 6.0 Marshmallow continues to see its distribution increase ahead of Android 7.0 Nougat’s launch this fall. In Google’s latest distribution chart for August, Marshmallow holds a 15.2 percent share, up 1.9 percentage points from last month.

Only two versions of Android saw their distribution share increase this month — Marshmallow and Lollipop — while every other release saw its share fall. Marshmallow saw the biggest increase of 1.9 percent, while Lollipop gained just 0.6 percentage points.

However, Lollipop continues to hold the biggest share overall with 35.5 percent overall. It is followed by KitKat on 29.2 percent, Jelly Bean on 16.7 percent, and then Marshmallow on 15.2 percent. Gingerbread now holds 1.7 percent, while Ice Cream Sandwich holds just 1.6 percent.

We can expect Marshmallow’s share to continue to rise even after Nougat makes its public debut. Its increase this month is small compared to the 3.2 percentage point rise it enjoyed in July, but it’s still going in the right direction, which is good news for Android users.

Of course, those with the latest Nexus devices can already get their hands on the Android N Developer Preview. It isn’t recommended for primary devices that you rely on, but the latest release — preview 4 — is pretty stable and snappy overall.
