LG is the only OEM that does not offer any kind of bootloader unlocking tools for its devices to aid development for them. However, it looks like things are about to change soon as the company seems to be working on official bootloader unlocking tool for its devices.
In an email sent by XDA user wolfgart, LG responded that they have been preparing a server to provide safer bootloader unlock, and are currently discussing the target models and release date.
We are already aware of many developers’ requests and opinions on bootloader unlock. So we have been preparing a server to provide safer bootloader unlock. Also, we are internally discussing the target model and the time of providing bootloader unlock. However, it will take some more time due to the technical restrictions, security issues, and the policy of mobile carriers.
While the company has not specified an exact timeframe for the release of its bootloader unlock tool, it is nice to know that it is actually working on one, as it would make the lives of developers a wee bit easier and open up a host of third-party development opportunities for its devices.
Do keep in mind though, that chances of this tool from LG supporting the carrier variants of its devices in the United States are pretty bleak.
