LG today unveiled its much hyped and leaked flagship, the LG V30. Featuring a 6-inch 18:9 FullVision OLED display with QHD+ resolution, the V30 is LG’s first smartphone to make use of its own OLED panel.

While previous LG V series handsets were known for their secondary display, LG is replacing it with Always On Display and a floating bar. With a new 18:9 aspect ratio display, including a secondary display on the V30 would have made little sense. So, LG is making up for it by offering additional software features.

The 7.3mm thick handset is packed to the brim with top-notch internals as well. It sports an octa-core Snapdragon 835 chipset running at 2.4GHz, 4GB LPDDR4x RAM, 64GB of UFS 2.0 storage, and a 3300mAh battery. Other features of the device include an IP68 certification making it dust and water-resistant, MIL-STD 810G rating, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB-C, wireless charging, and a microSD card slot.

The rear of the V30 features a dual-camera setup that has been upgraded in every possible way. While the primary sensor still features a 16MP resolution, it is now paired with an f/1.6 aperture — the widest so far in a smartphone. This will allow the sensor to absorb more light which should help in low-light scenarios. Even the secondary 13MP camera has been upgraded and now features an f/1.9 aperture which should be a big boon in low-light. The front of the V30 continues to feature a measly 5MP selfie snapper with an f/2.2 aperture.

The hardware is only one part of the story though. The V30 features a new Cine Video mode featuring Cine Effect and Point Zoom. The former allows users to shoot videos in cinematic hues, with Point Zoom allowing one to zoom in on a subject in a video. The handset is also capable of recording videos in LG-Cine Log that provides one with greater flexibility in post production.

LG has also included an updated 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC on the V30 which was first seen on the V20 last year. The Quad DAC output has been tweaked by B&O Play, with LG also bundling quality B&O Play earphones with the device. The handset also supports Master Quality Authenticated technology for high-resolution audio streaming.

On the software front, the LG V30 runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat with LG’s own UX 6.0+ on top of it. The latest UX from the company comes with new features like facial recognition and tighter integration with Google Assistant. The latter will allow V30 owners to use commands like “Ok Google, take a wide angle selfie” which is not possible on any other device. The handset will also tie in with other LG smart appliances thanks to LG bringing Google Assistant support for its smart appliances. The phone can also be unlocked using a custom voice keyword which leverages the Snapdragon 835’s DSP.

The LG V30 goes on sale in South Korea on September 21 and will be available in other key markets in the next few weeks after that. The 158g heavy handset will be available in Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue, and Lavender Violet colors. LG willa lso be offering a Plus variant of the V30 featuring 4GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Other specs of the handset remain the same as the regular V30.
