LG today announced that its upcoming flagship smartphone, the V30, will feature an f/1.6 aperture camera with glass lens.

LG says that when the V30 launches, its f/1.6 aperture camera would be the largest for a smartphone camera. The bigger aperture will allow the V30 to capture 25 percent more light compared to an f/1.8 lens which LG currently uses on the G6 and V20. The use of a glass Crystal Clear lens will also help improve color reproduction and deliver “greater light-collecting ability.”

“LG boasts an unrivaled heritage in smartphone photography and our decision to adopt glass in the V30 camera is specifically because this has traditionally been the realm of DSLRs,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “For the users for whom the V series was designed, this kind of innovation is significant.”

LG has also managed to reduce edge distortion by a third on the V30 for photos captured using the wide angle lens.

In spite of these improvements, LG has managed to make the camera module of the V30 30 percent smaller than that of the V20.

The company says that these improvements make the V30 well suited for photography and video capturing. They also make the V30’s camera superior to not only that of the V20 but other smartphones in the market as well.

Other specs of the V30 camera include laser detection AF, OIS, and EIS.
