2016 was a particularly bad year for LG. The company’s modular flagship smartphone, the LG G5, hardly found any takers, with its other offering also being pretty mediocre. However, despite the losses that its smartphone division is generating, LG’s Chief Technologist Skott Ahn says that the company is committed to making smartphones and has no plans on spinning off the division.

He also confirmed that LG will be launching its next new flagship smartphone — the LG G6 — in the “very near future.” Another spokesman from LG confirmed that since consumers did not show interest in the modular design of the LG G5 and its ‘Friends’, the company will scale back on its modular design aspect for the LG G6. Instead, the company will focus on the aesthetics and usability of the phone.

The G6 could launch at tech conference Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that starts at the end of February, although LG is still considering a couple dates for the launch, the spokesman said. The phone will initially launch in North America, Europe and South Korea, he added, and will only be available in China online.

The spokesman said that LG is considering the launch date of the G6, including a possible launch at MWC next month. He said that the phone will launch first in North America, Europe, and South Korea, though it will only be available only through online channels in China. LG expects to price the G6 around the same level as the G5 i.e. around the $500 to $600 mark.
