When it leaks, it pours, or so does the saying become in the mobile industry. After spending weeks with tiny nuggets of information about the LG G3, we are now seeing a steady stream of photos and details pop up, the latest of which is a close-up image of the phone’s back with a list of specs hand-written next to it, courtesy of many sources including Android Central. But most interesting to me in that photo are “Gesture Palm Selfie” and “Quick Circle.”
Before we get to these however, let’s reiterate the specs that we already know about the G3. It will have a 5.5″ Quad HD display, a 3000 mAh removable battery, a 1W speaker and a 13MP OIS+ camera as with the LG G Pro 2. It will come in two versions, one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, the other with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The new tidbits in that leaked photo however are “Gesture Palm Selfie” and “Quick Circle.”
Gesture Palm Selfie seems to be LG’s way to bank on the selfie trend. Recently, Samsung’s Galaxy K Zoom introduced the Selfie Alarm, a camera mode that lets you take selfies with the back camera while still making sure you are in the optimal frame position. LG’s iteration is vaguely named, and could either be a gesture to take selfies with the front or with the back camera. Here’s my personal speculation (take it with a grain of salt):
- If it works with the front facing camera, the phone could be using the proximity sensor to detect a wave of the hand in order to launch the viewfinder and instantly take a shot.
- If it works with the back facing camera, you can be holding or placing the phone nearby, and you’d simply wave to trigger the shot.
Quick Circle, however, seems quite obvious to me. I think it’s the Power Button on the back of the phone and it could be used by LG to trigger different apps or functionalities. On its G2, LG used the volume buttons to launch apps, even when the phone’s screen was off: the volume up button launched LG’s note app and volume down the camera. So the company isn’t a stranger to adding more shortcuts to the buttons on the back of the phone, especially since this is the spot they claim most users will lay their finger naturally.
On the G3, the power button is no longer a rectangle-like shape, but a circle with an interesting cone shape. What if that circle acted like a joystick or had a touch sensor underneath it? You could simply spin your finger on it clockwise and counter-clockwise and it would launch a wheel of app shortcuts or functions on the screen.
I may be quite off with my speculation, and Quick Circle might end up being a software feature, something like the swipe from the on-screen buttons to trigger Google Now, but with more apps baked in. That remains to be seen, but I’d personally find the Power Button a lot more interesting and unique.
