LG OLED V30

LG today announced that its next flagship smartphone will be the first ever to use a plastic OLED FullVision display. This will be LG’s second smartphone after the G Flex 2 in 2015 to make use of its OLED display.

If it was not already obvious, LG is referencing the V30 in its announcement here which it will be officially unveiling on August 31st at IFA 2017 in Berlin.

LG confirms that the V30 will sport a 6-inch QHD+ (1440 x 2880) OLED display, with support for 148 percent sRGB color space, 109 percent DCI-P3, and faster response times which makes the display ideal for VR. Lastly, the display will also support HDR10 for compatible content to offer a better viewing experience. Despite the increase in display size, LG says that the V30 will be smaller than the V20. The company has managed to achieve this by reducing the upper and lower bezels by 20 and 50 percent, respectively. It has also had to move the LG logo from the bottom of the device to the rear to maximise the available screen space.

“Expertise in OLED has long been a core competency of LG, and the technology has always been seen as a potential value-add for smartphones,” said Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With competition in the global smartphone space fiercer now than ever, we felt that this was the right time to reintroduce OLED displays in our mobile products.”

LG says that since the P-OLED display is made of plastic, its edges “can be curved to allow for a more ergonomic design and a better feel in the hand.” The company also says that it has managed to solve the burn-in problem affecting OLED displays using its advanced encapsulation and pixel-scanning technology.

The display on the V30 will be protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 to protect it from scratches and being shattered easily when dropped.

LG is also expected to supply its P-OLED display panels to Google for the Pixel XL 2 this year. For now, it remains to be seen if the company’s OLED panels are as good as Samsung or not.
