The newly launched Nexus 5 is, for all intents and purposes, a modified LG G2. It has a slightly smaller display, an incredibly smaller battery, and a less capable camera, but the rest of the phone is the same. Since the Nexus 5 ships with the latest version of Android, version 4.4 KitKat, the obvious question is why doesn’t the G2 come with KitKat? According to a leaked document from the French operator SFR, the wait won’t be very long.

If accurate, this leaked slide says the LG G2 will get 4.4 KitKat in either November or December. That means LG could potentially be the first handset maker to upgrade a phone to KitKat, something that is simply unprecedented. LG has notoriously been horrible when it comes to software updates. They either don’t upgrade their devices at all or are incredibly late to the game. Again, if LG puts 4.4 on the G2 before Samsung or HTC, they would immediately gain ample amounts of street cred.

What I’d love to see is for LG to fix the notification shade in the G2. It’s loaded to the gills with sliders and shortcuts, to the point where you only get a third of the notification shade for actual, you know, notifications. That’s my primary complaint with the phone, and if fixed, then I could easily see myself recommending it over the Nexus 5 simply because it has a gigantic battery and a display that has won tons of praise.

Come on, LG, let’s see you get things right for a change!
