Obi, backed by Apple’s former CEO John Scully, today unveiled two new smartphones that it has designed itself: the SF1 and the SJ 1.5. The company is also re-launching itself as the Obi Worldphone today after its initial attempt to enter the smartphone market last year met with a lukewarm response.

Both phones have been designed by a San Francisco design firm called Ammunition, which to its credit had previously designed the original Beats headphones, Apple’s PowerBook, and more. Scully says that Obi will distinguish its smartphones from competitors with their great design and by equipping them with better hardware components than its competitors.

Besides the striking design of both handsets, they also feature a 5-inch “extruded” screen: a Full HD display on the SF1 and a 720p one on the SJ 1.5. As for the specs, the SF1 comes with a Snapdragon 615 processor, LTE connectivity, and will be available in 2GB RAM/16GB and 3GB/32GB variants. There is also a 13MP rear shooter on the handset that features a Sony IMX214 sensor, which is capable of touch focus and recording Full HD videos at 30FPS. The front of the phone houses a 5MP camera with an LED flash.

The SF1, on the other hand, is a lower-end 3G totting smartphone that features a quad-core MediaTek processor. It sports an 8MP camera module at the rear from OmniVision with an F/2.2 aperture, while the front houses a 5MP snapper.

Both handsets also feature a microSD card slot, support for Dolby Surround Sound 7.1, Dual SIM connectivity, and a 3,000mAh battery.

While the SF 1 will be available for $199, the SJ1.5 will retail for $129. Both devices will be available from October in Vietnam followed by Indonesia, Thailand, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
