When it comes to buying a new smartphone, different people care about different things. That’s obvious. Some want a phone that looks good, specs or operating system be dammed. Others want a phone with the best spec sheet on the planet, and they’re willing to put up with buggy software because they just have to have that latest chip in there. But for me, it’s all about the screen. If I’m going to be staring at something for eight or more hours a day, it needs to be the best damn display on the market.

What makes a good panel? Color reproduction is one thing, as is screen resolution, but a key aspect is brightness. And so, I present to you a new 5.0 inch display from JDI that pushes an absolutely ridiculous 840 nits. The iPhone, seen as having the brightest screen on the market, does 600 nits. The Galaxy Note 3 hovers around that, but in some cases, for example enabling auto-brightness and going outside on a sunny day, it can crank it up an extra 50 nits or so.

But 840 nits? That’s just bonkers. How do they do this? They have “WhiteMagic” technology, which is just a fancy way of saying they have a subpixel array that uses your typical red, green, and blue subpixels, but they throw in an extra white subpixel that makes things super bright.

When will a phone using this LCD hit the market? Sadly, no dates were given.
