The latest data from research firm Canalys shows that the Indian smartphone market has overtaken U.S. to become the world’s second largest smartphone market in the world after China. Smartphone shipments in the country grew by 23 percent in Q3, 2017 for a total of over 40 million units.

    Samsung and Xiaomi made the most of the strong growth and shipped 9.4 million and 9.2 million smartphones, respectively. Both companies combined accounted for almost 50 percent of the total smartphone shipments in Q3, 2017 in India. While Samsung saw its shipments increase by over 30 percent, it was Xiaomi which made heads turn with its growth. The company’s shipments increased by over 290 percent — yes, you read right — to 9.2 million units. Canalys analyst Rushabh Doshi expects Xiaomi to overtake Samsung as India’s largest smartphone vendor within the next couple of quarters thanks to its steady pace of innovation and solid growth.

    The top five smartphone players in India for Q3, 2017 were Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Lenovo. Vivo and Oppo also posted a healthy increase in their smartphone shipments, while Lenovo/Motorola posted a meagre growth in its shipments for Q3, 2017.

    Interestingly, Apple also did exceedingly well in the Indian smartphone market in Q3, 2017. The company managed to more than double iPhone shipments to 900,000 units in Q3, 2017 compared to Q3, 2016. This was due to the company starting the production of the iPhone SE in India which allowed it to lower its price and offering the iPhone 6 with heavy discounts during the festive season.

    As for Xiaomi, the company is absolutely dominating the low-end spectrum of the smartphone market in India thanks to a wider availability of its products by increasing its offline presence. The company lacks an offering in the mid-range (Rs 15,000-Rs 20,000) range segment which is where it is losing out to Vivo and Oppo which might change soon as the company is scheduled to unveil a new smartphone on November 2.
