Huawei, the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, today unveiled the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro — its flagship handsets for the international market. While Huawei has met with huge success in China, the company has also managed to create a reputation for itself in the European smartphone market.

The Mate 10 and mate 10 Pro feature an all-glass construction similar to almost every other major flagship smartphone unveiled this year. The front of both devices is dominated with their FullView displays. The Mate 10 features a 5.9-inch QHD LCD panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio, while the Mate 10 Pro features a 6-inch OLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and an FHD+ (2160 x 1080) resolution.

The Mate 10 features minimal bezels at the front, though Huawei has still managed to include a fingerprint scanner at the bottom front bezel of the device. Thanks to its even smaller bezels, the Mate 10 Pro only features a Huawei branding at its bottom bezel with the fingerprint scanner located at the rear. The Mate 10 features an IP53 rating which means it is not water-resistant. However, it makes up for it by including a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack — both of which are missing from the Mate 10 Pro. The latter, however, features an IP67 certification that makes it water-resistant.

Internally, the Mate 10 and 10 Pro are powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 970 chipset. Based on the 10nm fabrication process, this octa-core chip features a 12-core Mali-G72 GPU and a neural processing unit dubbed NPU for AI-based tasks. This dedicated NPU helps the Kirin 970 chip to offer 25x more performance while still being 50x more power efficient for AI-based tasks. Huawei says its Emotion UI will make use of the NPU to offer relevant and smart tips to users for a better user experience. It also makes extensive use of the NPU to offer smart camera features which include the phone recognising pets, food, and other different shooting scenario and then switching to the appropriate camera mode. The bundled Translator app from Microsoft also makes extensive use of this NPU for faster language processing.

Huawei’s Emotion UI 8.0 is based on Android Oreo and includes a Desktop mode which converts the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro into a full-fledged desktop replacement for many. This mode is automatically activated when one connects the Mate 10/Pro to a display using a USB-C to HDMI cable. Under this mode, you can make the TV act as a secondary display for your phone or straight up mirror it.

Talking about the camera, the new Mate handsets come with a 12+20MP shooter setup at their rear. This is paired with an f/1.6 lens, OIS, laserAF, hybrid AF, and dual-tone flash. The secondary sensor continues to be monochrome in nature and allows the handsets to offer hybrid zoom, Portrait mode, and a monochrome mode. The front of the devices features an 8MP f/2.0 selfie shooter. The Mate 10 features 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the 10 Pro will be available with up to 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

As if all this was not already impressive enough, the new Mate devices are the first in the world to support LTE Cat. 18 for download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps. They also feature Dual-SIM dual-VoLTE functionality — a rarity in dual-SIM devices. Other features include Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.2, HD Audio, USB-C port, and DisplayPort 1.2 connectivity. All this is powered by a 4000mAh battery which can be charged quickly thanks to Huawei’s own SuperCharge technology that has been TUV certified.

Huawei Mate 10 and 10 Pro will be available in Black, Mocha Brown, Gold, and Pink Gold colors. Sadly, if you are more interested in the Mate 10, prepare to be disappointed. The handset will not be releasing in the U.S. or the U.K. Instead, it will be debuting in October in Australia, China, Egypt, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and UAE. The Mate 10 Pro will launch in mid-November in Europe and other neighbouring markets. Huawei does not seem to have any plans of launching both phones in the U.S. anytime soon as well. Prices for the Mate 10 start from €699, with the Mate 10 Pro coming in at €799.
