While there is always a chance that a new device from any manufacturer is right around the corner at any given moment, Huawei is a company that can manage to have one device leak out at the beginning of a month, and then launch something completely different at the end of it. That’s where their new Honor 6 comes in.
At the beginning of June, a leak suggested that Huawei had a new device coming down the pipe that would fit into their Honor brand. It would supposedly feature a 4.9-inch 1080p HD display, as well as plenty of other features, including a Kirin octa-core processor. In the leaked image, the Honor brand was very clear on the back of the handset. The codename for that device was reportedly “Mulan,” but no particular device name was known at that point.
Turns out that Huawei was indeed planning on launching a new Honor-branded handset, but it would end up being slightly different than what we had seen earlier in the month. The official handset is the Honor 6, and it has just been unveiled by the manufacturer. The Honor 6 features a 5-inch 1080p HD display (so pretty close to that original leak), and under the hood there’s a Kirin 920 octa-core chipset that features four A15 and four A7 cores. (Huawei touts that this particular processor can match Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor, but we’ll have to wait and see how that pans out.) On the back of the device you’ll find a 13-megapixel camera, and on the front a 5MP shooter. It comes with 3GB of RAM, and you can pick between a 16GB or 32GB variant. It’s running Android 4.4.2 KitKat right out of the box.
The Honor 6 sounds like an impressive device, but unfortunately there’s no word yet on how much it will cost, or in which regions of the world it might ship. It could very well stay in China, but it would be a real shame for Huawei to keep a device like this in only one region. Is Huawei one manufacturer that you’re hoping to see more of in 2014?
