The HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5 are arch rivals but they have quite a few common features as well. Both devices have similar internals and even features with similar functionality with only minor differences between them.
Case in point being the Ultra Power Saving mode on the Galaxy S5, which is present on the HTC One M8 under the Extreme Power Saving mode name.
What is Extreme Power Saving mode?
Like on the Galaxy S5, the Extreme Power Saving mode will help your One M8 to last nearly 30 hours on stand-by with only 10% charge. The catch here is that the device will enter into a low power state where it disables all the background apps and services, turn off mobile data while the screen is off and other radios, which basically turns your smartphone into a dumbphone.
Compared to Galaxy S5’s Ultra Power Saving mode, the One M8’s Extreme Power Saving mode has one advantage and disadvantage over it. The advantage is that since the M8 does not feature an AMOLED screen, enabling EPSM does not turn the screen into grayscale mode to save power and battery life. HTC also allows users to take a screenshot in this mode, which is not possible on the Galaxy S5.
The disadvantage is that it is possible to access any custom app like Hangouts or Whatsapp with EPSM enabled like Samsung allows on the Galaxy S5.
Either ways, Extreme Power Saving mode is a great feature to have, especially when you are not around an electrical plug point to charge your phone for an extended period of time.
How to enable it
Head over to Settings -> Power and toggle the Extreme power saving mode switch to on position. To automatically enable EPSM when the battery drops below a certain level, tap the EPSM option, enable the option on the top and then specify the battery percentage.
