HTC’s Mo Versi has confirmed what many One M7 owners were afraid of: the handset will not be receiving the Android 4.1 update.
While the Google Play edition One M7 will be getting updated to Android 5.1, the Sense variant will remain stuck on Android 5.0.
@kennymaclean Only the GPE version of M7 will receive 5.1. Our target is early April. Thanks.

@funky_1975 @kennymaclean Hi Sven, we've updated the M7 for up to 2 years from an OS standpoint.

HTC had released the One M7 in the first half of 2013 with Sense 5 and Android 4.1 on-board. Since then, the company has regularly updated the handset to the latest version of Android and added new features to go along with it.
Considering that Android 5.1 only introduced a bunch of bug fixes, stability and performance improvements, HTC should have upgraded the One M7 to it before ending software update support for it. Nevertheless, the handset is nearly two years old now, and it is likely that majority of its owners would be looking to upgrade now.
