What you’re looking at above is a photo taken by Brian Klug from AnandTech of a prototype gold plated HTC One. HTC has partnered with a company called MOBO to release a very limited edition series of 18 carat gold One smartphones. How limited are we talking about? Five. Not five hundred. Not five thousand. But two plus three equals five. As you can tell from the photo, it’s beyond ostentatious, it’s downright heinous. There’s little doubt in my mind that the son of an oil baron has already told his father he wants one, but us regular folks? No thanks.
Why did HTC do this? Your guess is as good as mine. Since everyone is doing a gold phone these days, and by everyone I mean Apple with the iPhone 5s and Samsung with the Galaxy S4, then why not join the club with something a little bit special? It creates good PR, right?
Sorry, but not in my mind.
What’s next for HTC’s gold curiosity? No word, but we do know that the company is going to hold a press conference in China on the 15th where it’s widely presumed they’ll be announcing the One Max, aka the 5.9 inch HTC One. A gold plated version of that would sure be a sight to behold.
By the way, in case you’re wondering, the gold makes the One cost about $4,400.
