HTC has just sent out press invites for an event due to take place next Wednesday in either China or Taiwan, I can’t really tell. The focus of the event will be the Desire series, so don’t expect to hear anything about a new high end flagship device. That doesn’t mean this event isn’t going to be exciting, however, given how much attention the mid-range market is getting.

Can HTC come out with a device that’s both as good as the recently announced Moto G and as cheap? I’m going to have to say no. Why? Because one of HTC’s latest Desire phones, the Desire 500, has recently launched in Europe for roughly 250 Euros. That’s roughly $340, yet it has an 800 x 480 pixel display. The Moto G has a 720p display, and is over $100 cheaper. The only reason I’m focusing on the display is because that’s typically the most expensive component of a device.

So what can we expect to see then? While I’d love to write a story about HTC revealing a new KitKat device, again, I doubt that’s going to happen. The Desire family is pretty well spaced out, with the 200, 300, 500, and 600. Maybe they’ll get a slight refresh? It’s really hard to tell with HTC what their next move will be.

What do you want to see HTC announce? And don’t say the M8, that’s a 2014 device.
