The OnePlus 3 is a darn good phone, even before you consider its attractive price tag. Besides the top-notch internals and hardware, OnePlus has worked on OxygenOS a lot as well since its introduction last year. On the OnePlus 3, OxygenOS manages to offer the best of both words: a feel of being based on near-stock Android and plenty of customisation options.
However, if you think that OxygenOS on the OnePlus 3 is lacking certain features or just want to tweak certain aspects of the OS, you can install Xposed framework on the handset. While installing Xposed framework also requires your OnePlus 3 to be rooted, it offers significant advantages over custom ROMs, including the overall ease of use.
So, if you have made up your mind on installing Xposed framework on the OnePlus 3, but are confused on how to proceed further, check out the steps below.
Note: It goes without saying that installing Xposed framework on your OnePlus 3 requires it to be rooted with a custom recovery like TWRP installed. While installing the framework will not format the phone or touch your personal data in any way, it is still recommended that you create a backup of all your important data in case something goes wrong.
Step 1: Download the latest version of Xposed framework (64-bit) and the Xposed framework manager APK, and transfer both files to the internal storage of your OnePlus 3.
Step 2: Reboot your OnePlus 3 into TWRP or any other custom recovery that you have installed on it.
Step 3: Once your device boots into TWRP, tap on Install and select the Xposed framework ZIP file that you had transferred to the device in Step 1. Confirm your selection of installing the ZIP file by dragging the slider at the bottom to the right. The installation process will take around 5-10 seconds. After it is complete, select the Reboot system option that you see at the bottom.
Step 4: The first boot after installing Xposed framework can take a particularly long time, so be patient.
Step 5: Once your OnePlus 3 boots back into Android, use a file manager of your choice and navigate to the folder where you had transferred the Xposed Installer APK. Proceed to install it like you would install any other APK. If you get a prompt saying you don’t have installation from unauthorised sources enabled, tap the ‘Settings’ button and then toggle the ‘Unknown Sources’ switch to on from the Security menu.
Step 6: Open the app once it is installed, open it and head over to the ‘Framework’ section to verify that Xposed framework is installed and active on your OnePlus 3.
You can search and install new modules by going to the Download section of the app. Once you have selected a module of your choice, swipe over to the ‘Versions’ tab and download its latest version. Once the download is complete, install the APK of the module. Finally, before you can start using the module, you will have to activate it which can be done from the Modules section of the app. For the modules to start working, you will have to reboot your device once.
Do remember that with Xposed framework installed, you will not be able to directly install future OxygenOS OTA updates. Instead, you will have to flash the latest full ROM of the OxygenOS update and then the framework to ensure that your device boots into Android after installing the update.
