As a Christmas gift for its users, OnePlus has started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the OnePlus 5. Coupled with OxygenOS 5.0, the update brings a plethora of new features and enhancements to the handset.
In addition to all the Oreo goodness like Picture-in-Picture, redesigned Quick Settings and Settings menu, the update also brings Parallel Space, a redesigned Camera UI with improvements to Portrait mode, and more. You can find the full change-log of the update can be found here.
The update is not going to show up instantly on your OnePlus 5 though. This is because OnePlus is rolling out the update in batches, with a wider rollout likely to occur by the end of next week. However, if patience is not one of your virtues and you cannot wait for the update to arrive, you can get it to show up on your device for download in just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Download a VPN app of your choice (My recommendation: Opera VPN) from the Google Play Store. Proceed to select a server from Canada or Germany.
Step 2: Now, head over to Settings -> System Updates and check for a new software update. Within a few seconds, the 1.5GB+ Oreo update for the OnePlus 5 should show up on your OnePlus 5.
Step 3: For optimum download speeds, I would recommend you to turn off the VPN connection first before you commence downloading the update.
The installation process will automatically start once the download is over. Since this is a major OS update, the installation process can take up to 5-7 minutes to complete. If you do end up installing the Oreo update on your OnePlus 5 by following the steps above, do drop a comment and let us know how you are liking Android Oreo on your device.
