Hisense is a Chinese company that’s slowly starting to gain traction in Western markets. They were one of the first companies to start offering sub-$100 tablets in stores like Walmart, and they’re also known for their highly affordable televisions. At CES this week, the company showed off a product called the “Pulse Pro”. According to CNET, it’s allegedly running the next version of Google’s failed TV software.

Now back up for a second, does anyone here remember Google TV? It was the search giant’s attempt at taking on the Apple TV. It failed for multiple reasons, namely cost and complexity. The first Google TV units, made by Logitech, cost twice as much as an Apple TV and came with infrared transmitters and receivers so that the box could control the other devices in your entertainment system. Everyone thought Google killed Google TV when they launched the $35 Chromecast, but it’s starting to look like that’s not the case.

Why is Google trying to get Google TV off the ground again? Because Smart TVs are a thing now, and with the new 4K format starting to emerge, people are going to be interested in purchasing a new set, especially since most 4K content will be delivered via the internet. This is Google’s opportunity to make an affordable box that can connect to existing televisions and software that can be built into future television sets.

At least that’s my theory. Let’s wait and see what Google announces in 2014.
