Earlier in May Google officially announced Daydream, the company’s biggest push into the virtual reality (VR) market to date.
At the time, it was confirmed that the Huawei-made Nexus 6P was being used as the benchmark for Daydream developers building for the platform moving forward, it turns out that particular handset might not even support Daydream when it launches later this year.
RoadtoVR has been given confirmation from Google’s VR chief, Clay Bavor, that it is not likely that current handsets will support Daydream. More than that, that includes current high-end devices, too.
Engadget points out that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, which is currently equipped in devices like the HTC 10, is perfectly poised to support VR, but its rollout in more devices is still ongoing. It’s an interesting turn of events, but not wholly unexpected, considering it’s not at all shocking that Google would want brand new devices for its brand new, and huge, push into VR.
Besides, there’s always Cardboard.
