Recently, Google has been showering its attention on India — one of the biggest and fastest growing smartphone market in the world. It was only last week that the company released the first batch of Android One smartphones in India with the aim of bringing a decent Android experience to even low-cost handsets.
Now, it looks like Google is in talks with the largest carrier in India — AirTel — on bringing carrier billing to the country. Both companies are right now negotiating on the revenue sharing. While Google wants a whopping 90% of the revenue, AirTel is looking to strike a better deal in its favor. AirTel has around 40 million subscribers in India, out of which 12.5 use its 3G services.
Credit Card penetration is relatively low in India and because of this most people are not able to purchase apps and other content from Google Play. Bringing carrier billing to such a huge user base is definitely going to be healthy for the Android users in India and will benefit the Android ecosystem as a whole.
Earlier this year, Microsoft announced its plans on bringing carrier billing to India for its devices running Windows Phone, though the company is yet to provide more information about it.
