Google has been launching Nexus-branded smartphones and tablets for quite some time, thanks to partnerships with companies like Samsung, HTC, Huawei, and others.

But it sounds like Google will be getting more involved in the process moving forward. Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, spoke at Recode‘s Code Conference, and said that Google will “be more opinionated about the design of the phones.” That will mean a lot of things, including pushing devices “forward” in terms of features.

While hardware will be part of that, Pichai actually focused on software, saying that Google will “hopefully add more features,” on top of Nexus devices. The company sees a lot of room for software innovation, and apparently they want to make sure those innovations get into the devices moving forward:

“You’ll see us hopefully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones. There’s a lot of software innovation to be had.”

However, that will only go so far, because Google has no plans to make its own devices, and will continue to partner with OEMs to create the hardware for Nexus-branded devices. So, no Pixel Nexus devices in the pipeline just yet, it seems.
