With the delay of Android Wear 2.0 into 2017, there have been rumors that Google plans on launching its own smartwatches at the same time.

And now, as reported by The Verge, Google’s own Product Manager of Android Wear, Jeff Chang, has confirmed that is indeed the plan. Google will launch a pair of “flagship smartwatches” in early 2017, and they will be the first on the scene with Android Wear 2.0 on board.

Interestingly enough, the new smartwatches won’t be under the Pixel branding, but will instead have the branding of the company manufacturing the watches. Chang would not confirm which company is putting together the devices, but did say that it is a company that has launched Android Wear-based wearables in the past. Chang said it’s similar to the Nexus program, as far as collaboration goes for hardware and software.

The report adds that Google will release the fifth, and final, Developer Preview for Android Wear 2.0 in January of next year, and that it will feature not only Android Pay support (which will only be supported on devices with the requisite hardware under the hood), but also Google Assistant. Android Pay will work on iOS devices, too, Chang confirmed, but that Android Wear 2.0 will have differences in functionality when connected to Apple’s mobile devices versus Android-based smartphones.

Chang also confirmed that after Google’s new smartwatches launch, other companies will join in on the new product launches, with new Android Wear 2.0-based devices headed to the market throughout 2017. New devices will probably be announced at CES 2017.

“We’ve enabled a lot of diversity with our hardware partners to target different types of consumers and preferences,” he says, before noting that Google is “quite optimistic” about the prospects of smartwatches. “This is a marathon, not a sprint. This category of product is here with us to stay.”

As far as the current watches that will be upgraded to Android Wear 2.0, the original report has a handy list:
