Up until just recently, the file size limit for Android developers was set at 50MB. That restriction is changing, though.

Google has announced via its Android Developers Blog that it is upping the maximum size of an Android APK that can be uploaded to 100MB. Doubling the size of the upload limit means that developers can start creating even more graphics-intensive games, as well as much more intricate applications in general. At the same time, the company is also pointing out that a user’s data allotment and available connectivity could deter them from downloading a big app, so to keep that in mind moving forward, even with the boost.

Developers are still able to make bigger apps, of course, with the additional expansion files typically downloaded at the same time as the main application. Those specific expansions can measure in up to 2GB.

This change in policy for APKs is meant for Android devices running version 4.0 or higher, while Android devices running 3.2 or older still have the 50MB restriction in place.
