Yesterday, @evleaks revealed that Google is working on a Pixel branded smartwatch due to be released in fall this year. The leak came just a few hours after Qualcomm confirmed that it is indeed working on new chipset for the Wear OS platform. Now, more details about this new Wear chipset and Google’s smartwatch have been detailed.

As per the leak from Winfuture sources, Google is working on not one but three Wear OS smartwatches. They are codenamed “Ling”, “Triton”, and “Sardine.” There’s no detail on the specs of the three handsets so it remains to be seen how Google will differentiate between them. Its also possible that while Google is working on three Wear OS smartwatches, it will end up only launching one. One thing is for clear though, these new smartwatches make use of Qualcomm’s Wear 3100 platform.

The Wear 3100 chip will continue to feature four Cortex-A7 cores paired with an Adreno 304 GPU. Interestingly, contradictory to Qualcomm’s claims, the Wear 3100 will continue to be based on the 28nm fabrication process — the same as the existing Wear 2100 platform. Technically, this means the Wear 3100 will offer the same level of efficiency and performance as the existing Wear 2100 chip found in almost every Wear OS smartwatch out there.

However, Qualcomm has another sleeve up its trick. It is using a new PMW3100 power management solution a.k.a blackghost which is inspired by Qualcomm’s own platform for smaller wearables. This leads to the chip being incredibly efficient and offering new features. It will presumably offer always-on voice recognition as seen on many new Android phones. The chip will also take over the duties of running the Always-on Display which should greatly help reduce standby drain as the main processor itself would be shut down.

Google wants to catch up to Apple Watch with its next-generation of Wear OS smartwatches so it would include every possible feature you could think of. This includes VoLTE, NFC, GPS, LTE, Bluetooth with apt-X, pedometer, and heart rate monitor.

Interestingly, Google has been working on these new Wear OS smartwatches for well over a year but their release has been delayed due to various issues. The first hardware sample of these watches was delivered in autumn 2017 but they were not up to the mark. One of the reasons behind the delay was the integration of the antennas into the smartwatch design. Another issue was that the blackghost chip itself was not ready in time. Nonetheless, with most issues sorted, Google is now aiming for a fall release of its new smartwatch

The report also details that apart from Google, other partner fashion brands like Fossil, Louis Vuitton are also working on new Wear OS watches with this new Qualcomm chip.
