Google has a new teaser up on its Google Store which hints at the impending launch of the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. The handsets will be unveiled by Google at its I/O 2019 conference scheduled to start on May 7th. The “Help is on the way” teaser on the Google Store points to the Google and Marvel’s Avengers tie-up.
Google has recently released the Avengers: Endgame Playground AR stickers and the line from the movie points to the Pixel 3a series joining the Pixel 3 series.
The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have leaked numerous times over the last few months and almost everything about them is known.
With its new Pixel 3a lineup, Google will offer the same camera performance as its more expensive Pixel 3 series but in a less premium and cheaper package. The cost-cutting involves switching to a Snapdragon 710/Snapdragon 675 chipset, packing 4GB RAM, and dropping the Gorilla Glass rear panels in favor of a plastic body.
Given the performance issues that have plagued the Pixel 3 series right from its launch, it will be interesting to see how well the Pixel 3a series performs with their weaker chipset. The slower chip also means that despite the same camera hardware as the Pixel 3 series, the Pixel 3a camera performance will be a notch below its bigger brother.
The Pixel 3a series will reportedly be available in the United States on T-Mobile and Verizon’s network. It should also launch in Asian countries like India where premium mid-range phones have been doing exceedingly well.
