After dropping the second Developer Preview of Android 8.1 Oreo late last month, Google today started rolling out the stable build of the OS for all compatible Nexus and Pixel devices. The update fixes a number of bugs on the Pixel 2 and 2 XL and also introduces some minor new features and enhancements.

For developers, the Android 8.1 update also activates the Pixel Visual Core which means they can now use it to capture HDR+ photos through their app. There are also improvements to Neural Networks API to accelerate on-device machine intelligence and improvements to the Autofill APIs. Starting from Android 8.1, the OS will also display the battery percentage of any Bluetooth device connected to your phone in the Quick Settings panel. Google is also imposing a restriction on push notifications from apps and limiting them to sending only one such notification per second.

For the Pixel 2, the Android 8.1 update fixes the poor audio quality issue while recording videos. The handset will now also record videos from the top microphone instead of the bottom one for better audio quality. The random reboot issue and unresponsive edges affecting certain Pixel 2 XL units have also been fixed with this update. Google has also tweaked its emoji set in Android 8.1 and fixed the horrible burger and beer emoji while at it. To combat the burn-in issues around the navigation bar on the Pixel 2 XL, Google will also make the nav bar fade away after a few seconds of inactivity in Android 8.1.

Lastly, Android 8.1 bumps the security patch to December for all Nexus and Pixel devices. Google has already made the factory images of the update available on its website, with the OTA scheduled to go live later today.
