Google is rolling out its latest Scam Detection feature for Pixel users, first announced back in May during the Google I/O 2024 conference. Available for Pixel 6 and newer models, this feature uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify suspicious calls in real time, helping protect users from common scam tactics.

Scam Detection, powered by Google’s Gemini Nano AI model, aims to notify users when a call resembles typical scam patterns. For example, if a caller claims to be from your bank and demands an urgent transfer of funds, the feature analyzes this pattern and issues alerts in real-time—audio, haptic, and visual—to warn users. For users worried about privacy, this technology works entirely on-device. This means any call data are not stored or sent to the cloud for processing.

    The feature is not enabled by default; users have the call to activate it. Currently, only beta for English-speaking users in the U.S. has access. However, Google revealed plans to expand to more regions and devices over time. Early adopters are encouraged to provide feedback on how well the detection works, suggesting that the company is still refining the technology.

    “User safety is at the heart of everything we do at Google,” said Google in a recent blog post. “We’re using the best of Google AI to identify and stop scams before they can do harm.”

    This feature may be effective for simple and general scam tactics. However, scammers have also been leveraging AI to execute sophisticated and realistic scams. AI-generated voices or personalized information could be harder to detect. The feature’s reliance on local processing may also limit its capabilities in adapting to new forms of scams compared to server-based solutions, which learn from a larger dataset. Google’s Scam Detection is a significant step forward, but users still need to remain cautious. 

    Aside from Scam Detection, Google also introduced live threat detection through Google Play Protect. This feature helps identify harmful apps in real time by analyzing their background activity. If a potentially harmful app is detected, users are notified to take action and protect their phones. Like Scam Detection, all the processing is done on the device itself to protect user data, and Google Play Protect aims to enhance the overall safety of the Android ecosystem.
