Up until now, Google has worked closely with various OEMS to create new Nexus handsets every year. Now, a report from The Telegraph states that the company is now looking to take the next step and release a smartphone that is wholly developed and designed by it.

With the Nexus program, Google works closely with its OEM partner on releasing what is believed to be the best Android smartphone running the purest form of Android. However, there are some trade-offs as OEMs usually compromise in one area or another to ensure that the sale of their flagship device is not affected.

By developing its own smartphone — much like the Pixel series of tablets and laptop, the company expects to take more control over design, manufacturing, and software. The report claims that the smartphone will be released by the end of this year.

It is likely that the development of this new Google-branded smartphone is being helmed by Rick Osterloh, who was recently appointed by the company to head their new unified hardware division. And despite Google launching its own smartphone, the Nexus lineup is not going anywhere. It was only earlier this month that Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said that the company is going to be more opinionated when it comes to the design of its Nexus lineup going forward.

Are you excited about a Google-branded smartphone? Or do you just want the company to focus on its Nexus lineup?
