Google has announced some changes to Google Play Games that will it will be making to the service this year. Google Play Games might not have exactly taken off, but it sure is a fun way to compete with your friends and family in your favorite game.

The new Play Games API from Google will reduce “sign-in friction and unnecessary permission requests.” The changes as described by Google are as follows:

  • Players are prompted to sign-in once per account, rather than once per game

  • Players no longer need their account upgraded to Google+ to use Play Games services

  • Once players have signed-in for the first time, they will no longer need to sign in to any future games; they will be automatically signed in (This can be disabled from the Play Games app settings)

The biggest upgrade, in my opinion, has to be the ability to use Play Games without being forced to sign up for Google+. This change will have little impact on existing Play Games users since they must already have a Google+ account to use the service, but should benefit future users of the service.

Additionally, not having to sign in to Play Game in each app is a huge usability improvement and really reduces the hassle and frustration of using the service.
