By the time October rolls around, when it’s expected that Google will launch the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, the rumor mill will more than likely have discovered just about everything when it comes to the new handsets.
Today, for instance, we get a report from 9to5Google, which cites unnamed sources, that says both the smartphones will boast a pair of front-facing cameras, and that at least one of those sensors in each unit will be a wide-angle option. That feature will allow both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL to take what the publication is calling “super selfies”. The new front-facing cameras will also bring an improved portrait mode to the lineup.
The report’s sources also state that Google’s new front-facing camera system will allow for the handsets to support a new facial recognition system. However, the sources were unable to provide any real details on what this feature will bring to the table. The report also states that Google will introduce a new Visual Core chip, but the sources were unable to shed any real light on what that mean.
LG introduced a wide-angle selfie camera with the G6, so that particular bullet point on the spec sheet might not do much. However, considering the strength in camera quality that the Pixel smartphone family has brought to the fore so far, it may be a nice addition.
