Back in 2016, Google unveiled the Nexus 5X alongside the Nexus 6P. Made by LG, the handset was the spiritual successor of the massively popular Nexus 5 from 2013 and was offered as a cheaper alternative to the Nexus 6P with the same excellent 12MP rear camera. Google also started offering the handset through Project Fi in the US.
However, the handset was not without its issues, with many Nexus 5X owners complaining of their handset bootlooping a few months or after a year of use for no reason at all. All major smartphones produced by LG up until 2017 were prone to bootlooping randomly and the Nexus 5X was no exception to this. However, with the Nexus 5X being well over two years old and no longer being manufactured, Google has limited stocks of the handset. And the high replacement rate of the Nexus 5X means that the limited stock is already on reserves. The stock issues ultimately forced Google to offer Nexus 5X owners with the monthly $5 device protection subscription who’d send their phone for repair a $100 Google Play credit or a $53 check towards a new device.
The move obviously disappointed Nexus 5X owners who were hoping for Google to repair their device or send them a replacement in lieu of their defective device. Thankfully, Google has had a change of heart and is now offering Project Fi Nexus 5X owners a Moto X4 Android One handset as a replacement device. This means that if you send in your faulty Nexus 5X to Project Fi, you will likely end up with a $399 Moto X4. You will have to pay $69 as a deductible towards Device Protection but this is still a great deal. The Moto X4 might not have beastly specs but its octa-core Snapdragon 630 chip, 4GB RAM, and 5.2-inch Full HD display are still not bad by any means at all. Plus, it also has a dual-camera setup at the rear that lets you take some ultra wide-angle shots.
