Remember Google Currents? The app was surprisingly missing on the Nexus 5 and the Android 4.4 KitKat update for other Nexus devices. Well, today Google has announced that it is combining Play Magazines service and Currents into Newsstand.

The Newsstand service will consist of 1,900 publications, free and paid, and include selections like The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Vanity Fair and Wired. According to Google, the Newsstand app will “automatically put the news you care about most front and center and present stories that interest you based on your tastes.” With Newsstand, Google is basically trying to put the app as your one stop source for RSS feeds, Magazines, news and eBooks.

The Play Magazines app will  be updated to Newsstand over the next few days, and will also automatically format blog posts for easier reading on tablets or phone. While free sources can be subscribed from within the app itself, the paid sources will use the Play Store for the transaction.

Newsstand will be rolled out to users in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Australia over the coming few days. The Currents app for iOS to will also be updated to Newsstand sometime “early next year”.
